Moving Image Production: Case Study (FINAL)

This case study is my demographic will be teenagers

Normal lives for today's teenagers would be spent doing  many things. For example going to school during the weekdays and then after school they will do go to various clubs, football, rugby, swimming or undertake their hobbies e.g. Gym, Skateboarding and so on or maybe they would go out with their mates to a park or town even maybe each others houses.  At the weekends teenagers like to plan thing to do with their friends and spend most of their time with their friends rather than their families. T his is how they discover their own identity.  Planned social activities would probably be something  like going cinema or London or extended time on their hobbies.  Homework will be considered but not always done in their spare-time on the weekends.

The Big Bang Theory/Sitcom/Target Audience
The sitcom I have chosen is The Big Bang Theory.  I have chosen this because it is on E4 and its target audience is predominantly 16-34 year old teengarers teenagers.  When I watch TV I usually choose the E4 channel.

Teenagers enjoy the unusual, something that is different compare to regular shows which will make them laugh and think about things, maybe even provoke discussion between themselves.
The Big Bang Theory's secondary audience would be adults because they would see their son/daughter watch it and because his son/daughter might be laughing the adult might find it funny as-well

It appeals to young people mostly because the episodes are mixed with comedy and reality by when they tackle a real life problem and solve it as a group which is something you me face in life as you grow up.

Purpose

The purpose of a sitcoms is to entertain because the genre of sitcoms is comedy that shows the common environment of their day which is what exactly The Big Bang Theory is. e.g. Work, Home or weekends out
The purpose of the Big Bang Theory is to entertain and show that people who are classed as 'different', 'nerds' are human as well and have the same problems as everyone else but this is shown in a funny way, but also makes the audience to feel and show compassion or laugh at their

It shows the highs and lows of friendship and personal relationships and how to work through the good and bad times with the daily trials and tribulations of everyday life. e.g. In a episode Raj is upset about a girl that he meets who runs out on a date with him and and his friends help him through the situation but at the the end everything turns out okay just like at the start everyone is friends

Compared to the Mars bar advert The Big Bang Theory get to have 30 minutes to give the audience the purpose of the episode unlike the mars bar ad you have to give your point/purpose in 30 seconds so they have to grab the audience's attention very quickly by using colours and songs that their target audience would like and know e.g. the crowd as it is very colourful. But with Educating Yorkshire, they film it live because its a factual progamme. all the footage happens naturally

Genre Conventions (typical recurring feature)

Sitcoms are set in everyday situations were by that means if it were 14 year old teenagers it would be following them going around school then them after school doing what they like to do in their free time.

The Big Bang Theory is set in everyday situations for young adults living in a flat and going to work as well as extra activities on the weekend and after work. e.g. Their scientists which work on week days and like to all eat dinner together at sheldon and Leonard's apartment and play some 'geeky' games/board games for example they have a night called "halo night" where by they all playa game every friday night together on their xbox at sheldon and Leonard's apartment.

The programme is about four men in their early 20s and are classed as 'geeks', their rivalry, mutual interests and the gradual introduction of female companions.

The programme is mainly around the four men.  Three of the characters have doctorates and one has a masters degree but all are classed as 'science geeks' and all work in the same university.  Two of the characters live together - Shelden and Leonard, Howard lives with his mum and the final male character, Rajesh is on visa from India and has his own flat.

Shelden and Leonard live in an apartment block and across the hall is a young female character named Penny.  Penny is from Nabraska which is referred to as an out back 'hick' town.

Penny is an waitress who is trying to get into acting, very unsuccessfully and is the object of Leonard's affections.

The four male characters spend their free time in the comic book store, watching 'Marvel' character films e.g. the Green Lantern, Hulk etc and playing computerised games.

Throught the series it follows Leonard on his quest as a geek to woo the beautiful but not very bright Penny in his quest to form a relationship with her.

Sheldon is remarkably clever and achieved his first doctorate in his early teens.  Sheldon is classed as a genious and he knows it but he has some bizzare mannerisums and ideas of gradure that he is not opposed to reminding the other charactres.

Howard is Jewish and is obsessed with 'pulling' women that are completely out of his league.  Howard still lives with his mum and is the butt of many of his jokes.  Although you never see his mum you hear her and she is always loud and speking about her ailments and food.

Rajesh is on a working visa and is an astro physasist.  Rajesh has a problem speaking with and in front of women, when he his front of a women he will wisper to one of the other three male characters to say or ask a question.

Narrative Structure

The circular narrative of a sitcom is when something goes wrong then they have a problem and they all try to solve it and by the end the problem gets solved and everything is just like the start, all friends. this is a repeated pattern for every episode its so they continue this cycle for each episodes.

Each episode starts with a problem one of the characters is having.  The problem will be discussed and as always Sheldon wil try and show the others how much more intellegent he is and that he would not have a second thought on the kind of problems the others have.

They go about solving the problem and usually this involved going to the comic book store to make them all feel happier or playing a game.

After the problem has been solved then end of the episode is usually based around them eating takeaway dinners all sitting together on sofas in Sheldon and Leonard's appartment

Style & Tone

The series is comedy based but shows a heirachy between the charactres and how each character deals with this and their position in the group which reflects every day life.

It has a way of showing how people can make their own mark in life and how what you do or say can effect others.

I feel that the issues they cover in the programme, although very over the top translate easily into the lives of teenagers and simply but effectively gets the message across in a comical manner.

Representation

I feel the series represents young males' in today's society who are seen as 'not normal' to many people.  It touches on religion/culture differences, occasionally on financial status.  stereotypes are used' therefore helping the audience to easily identify with each character.

Penny's  stereotype would be she is beautiful and kind, making people wanting to be around her

Another example would be Howard because he still lives at home and he is 33 years old with his mum and this is a normal thing for him but they exaggerate it in some episodes to make it funny

Sheldon's stereotype would be just frustrating because he is socially awkward for at the point he doesn't think that he is awkward which annoys the others and makes it funny. This is a habit that he has but again its a little thing that they extradite making it funny.

Themes/Messages/Values
The trials and tribulations of young men growing up and moving on with their lives and how things that bother you as a teenager also continue to be a problem in young adult life.  It shows views that with good firends behind you, and those firends from different backgounds if you work together and have determination you can succeed.

e.g. Leonard and Sheldon have a closer relationship because they share a flat and Leonard has to put up with Sheldon's little habits that annoy him but they still end up friends
Educating Yorkshire/Factual programming/Target Audeince
The target audience for Educating yorkshire is 11-16, the reason for this is because when you reach 11 years old, you start secondary school so it will give you a idea of how your future will be in your school and gives the viewer a idea of how secondary will be like.

Educating Yorkshires secondary audience would be adults mostly because if their son/daughter goes secondary school the farther/mother might wanna get a idea of how secondary schools are like now compared to when they went to school.

Purpose
To show what a regular secondary school is like and show how the school deals with problems, which could give the school a good reputation or bad reputation to the school. To entertain teenagers in secondary school to see how different the school in yorkshire is compare to there school.

Genre Conventions (typical recurring feature)
Educating Yorkshire is a reality programme the filming is done by CCTV cameras in the corners of classroom and hall ways. there are no scripts as it is all filmed "as live". if they make a mistake they can still edit it even though it is called reality TV.

Narrative Structure
The whole episodes are "Fly on the wall" they select a group of kids and follow them around the school with the problem they have and certain teachers try and help the kids with their problems. They have interviews on individual characters so that the views can hear their say in, why they have problem, what they want to do about it etc. then because they have no one to criticize them about what they are saying the views get a clear picture of the situation

Style & Tone
Educating yorkshire is a reality programme with a mixture of light hearted parts and some dark parts

For example some, some kids fool around in class and don't do there work but just before they sit the exam they realize how serious the work they have not been doing and do everything in there will to get their targeted grade.

it has a way of showing how people act in school then how the school solve the problem giving you a clear image on how the school staff.

Representation

They have chosen a school in Yorkshire to repersent many of the secondary schools throughout Britain.  It demonstrates that the same problems they encounter are the same in every area across the UK.

It shows that there are children that natually do well, pupils that struggle, friendships that are made and broken.  It also shows that there is a need for sensitive teachers, support and social workers to support particular children.

The expectations of schools are the same, everyone has to learn the same things and achieve the best levels they can.

It could be criticised and could be seen as positive as if the teachers does a good job or negative if the teacher does not do well in the situation

Themes/Messages/Values
the point in having this show is not only to entertain but to motivate teenagers, as educating yorkshires target audience is teenagers they will soon realise that the test will come soon and the quicker they act the better they will do.

Mars Bar/Advert/Target Audience

The purpose for advertising is to inform and pursued you to buying their product e.g. in the mars bar advert they say if you buy and eat the mars bar you will turn into a unstoppable goal keeper.

Mars are showing that if you eat a mars bar you can play for England. Which gives you confidence and inspiration so that the target audience would be sports players,  pacifically players more than any other sports.

The secondary audience could be teenagers who play football as a hobby so for example. If a teenager who plays football is sitting on the sofa with his ipod and using the tv as a background noise, he hears the sound of cheering on a pitch and the commentator because he has heard that and he is now interested and pays full attention to the advert he/she wants to find out what the advert is trying to sell you

Purpose
To say that if you eat this mars bar it will energize you so that you will possibly be more aware and lively e.g. if you had a early match and your still tired then you can eat a mars bar to keep you up.

Genre Conventions (typical recurring feature)
Their are a range of camera shots in this TV advert. e.g. long shot, if it were to be just the one camera shot it would of been boring to watch so the different camera shots make it more intresting

Narrative Structure
There is a person at the  side who is a ball boy he see's with his own eyes that Englands goal keeper gets sent off because of a injury. As the goal keeper is being carried off the pitch, the ball boy quickly takes off his jacket then stands in the goal ready for the other team to shoot their penaltys. He puts off one guy and kicks the ball over the top bar then saves two goals then at the end after the three penaltys him and rest of the team go in a hudle cheering with happiness. And in the background the comentaters say ''He's done it, looks like England have a new goal keeper''

They have made the veiwers suprised that just a ball boy is such a good goal keeper which makes you want to buy the choclate bar. their

The rule of three would be the three penalties that have been taken

Style & Tone
This TV advert can be inspirering to people it makes you feel like anything is possible and your dreams can come true.  It has a makes a difficult sitution e.g. the goal keeper cant be in goal anymore and turns it round to a happy joyus occasion and all because someone ate the right bar of chocolate.

Representation
The advert represents the chocolate industry and how they think chocolate can give you a boost of energy to do things you may have only thought about.

Themes/Messages/Values
The messages is if you eat a mars bar you can do anything even be the England goal keeper or be really good at you sport you do after eating a Mars bar to give you that extra boost of enery enough to do something so amazing it benefits other people e.g. the team and the supporters, the motto at the end is "Work, Rest, Play your part"
